Non-technical Skills Simulation Training

Abstract: Purpose of Review "Non-technical skills" are critical to patient safety and form an important part of a surgeon's competency. Inter-disciplinary team training is now considered essential to train these valuable skills. This review discusses the importance of non-technical skills, and the role these skills have in simulation training within Otolaryngology. Recent Findings Otolaryngologists are uniquely positioned to encounter airway emergencies. Consequently, team-based training in crisis scenarios is especiall… Show more

“…The Non-Technical Skills for Surgeons (NOTSS) system, Oxford NOTECHS II, and Observational Teamwork Assessment for Surgery (OTAS) have been widely employed across a range of surgical disciplines and environments (Flin R., 2012) (Robertson et al, 2014) (Javia & Sardesai, 2017). Although NTS assessment is most often employed in clinical settings, it can also be adapted to surgical simulations (Magill & Tolley, 2020). Notably for head and neck surgical trainees, NTS training can be an integral component of simulated surgical emergencies (Wu, Kim, Fung, & Roth, 2018).…”

“…13 Within nontechnical skills, we included skills such as teamwork, interpersonal skills, decision making, communication, attitude, and critical thinking. 14 We classified educational outcome levels based on the Kirkpatrick hierarchy. 15 The reaction level determines the level of satisfaction; the learning level measures the level of knowledge, skills, and values acquired by the participants from the program; the behavior level ascertains the changes in the participants' behaviors in the work environment because of the program; and the impact level examines the institutional outcomes that demonstrate a good return on investment and can be attributed to the training program.…”
