Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis is the most rapidly growing indication for liver transplantation in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma in the U.S.

Abstract: Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is currently the third leading indication for liver transplantation (LT) in the U.S. and is predicted to become the leading indication for LT in the near future. The trends in NASH‐related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) among LT recipients in the U.S. remain undefined. We performed a retrospective cohort study to evaluate trends in the etiology of HCC among adult LT recipients in the U.S. from 2002 to 2012, using national data from the United Network for Organ Sharing regist… Show more

“…In comparison, HCC due to hepatitis C has increased only 2.25 fold over a 10-year period from 2002-2012. While diabetes and obesity are independent risk factors for HCC, the increase in NASH related HCC persisted after controlling for these variables 222 . Although older age, obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus and male sex are risk factors for the development of HCC, NASH does seem to contribute independently 221,223 .…”

“…In our local context, the prevalence of NASH risk factors, such as obesity, increased from 6% in 1998 to 10.8% in 2010, while diabetes mellitus increased from 9% in 1998 to 11.3% in 2010, which intuitively would translate into an increasing prominence of NASH and consequently NASH‐related (i.e., cryptogenic) HCC 10. This can also be extrapolated to many other countries that are afflicted by the burgeoning obesity and diabetes epidemic 31, 32, 33…”
