Noncontact Ultrasonic Nondestructive Techniques: State of the Art and Their Use in Civil Engineering

Abstract: Ultrasonic methods of testing of civil engineering materials in air where both transmission of waves into materials and reception of signals are contactless are reviewed. Short history, technical details and examples of applications of currently available methods are discussed.

“…Non-contact acoustic excitation is one method of inducing resonance in an object by means of air coupling, which can be used to perform a frequency response analysis. Its effective use has been proven in modal experiments that require small but measurable displacements [19][20][21][22]. This method has specific advantages compared to impact and shaker excitations.…”

“…But as in the application of other NDTs in the field, some limitations of impact methods of resonance measurement have been encountered. These limitations are particularly related to coupling effects resulting lower signal to noise ratio as well as lack of automation [24]. These short comings have become motivations to develop non-contact methods of excitation for resonance testing.…”

“…Air-coupled ultrasonic transducers, on the other hand, do not require special surface treatment and can serve an alternative solution to perform contactless measurements needed for ultrasonic wavefield imaging [15,16]. However, the spatial resolution of the acquired ultrasonic wavefield data can be undesirably low if the active sensing area of the air-coupled transducer is not small enough.…”
