NonfoodborneVibrioInfections: An Important Cause of Morbidity and Mortality in the United States, 1997–2006

Abstract: NFVIs, especially those due to V. vulnificus, demonstrate high morbidity and mortality. Persons with liver disease should be advised of the risks associated with seawater exposure if a wound is already present or is likely to occur. Clinicians should consider Vibrio species as an etiologic agent in infections occurring in persons with recent seawater exposure, even if the individual was only exposed during recreational marine activities. Immediate antibiotic treatment with aggressive monitoring is advised in s… Show more

“…It is possible that the majority of Vibrio sources in Florida are derived from the West coast, along the Gulf of Mexico. In a US study surveying non-foodborne marine Vibrio infections from 1997-2006, states along the Gulf Coast reported the largest number of cases (57%), followed by those in the Atlantic region (24%) [16].…”

“…Other VACS infections occurred year-round in our setting in contrast to the pattern seen with Vibrio outside the tropics. 9 We have not directly looked at clinical outcomes for these organisms, which is a limitation of this study. However, comparing rates of bacteremia gives an indication of whether illness severity differs between VACS organisms.…”

“…They occur with a striking predominance in adult males; skin and soft tissue sites are most likely to be involved, usually involving the lower limb, which is consistent with exposure during waterassociated activities. 9 Because this is the first study to compare the epidemiological characteristics of this group of organisms, the general applicability of our findings needs to be addressed. We believe, for the following reasons, that this study has generalizable validity.…”

“…Die Infektion erfolgt über den Kontakt offener Wunden mit erregerhaltigem Wasser (zum Beispiel beim Waten oder Baden), oder, wie in den USA [18] und Israel [19] beschrieben, beim Verarbeiten roher Fische oder Meeresfrüchte. V. parahaemolyticus verursacht vorrangig Gastroenteritiden, wohingegen V. vulnificus und V. alginolyticus vor allem Wundinfektionen/Septikämien hervorrufen.…”
