Lastly, in line with other studies demonstrating the unintended effects of introduced insects attacking non‐target plants (Hakes & Meunier, 2018; Noonburg & Byers, 2005; Russell et al., 2007), our results indicate the need of caution when introducing herbivorous insects for biological control of exotic weeds. Introducing exotic herbivores can enhance rather than attenuate the invasiveness of exotic plants by reinforcing the adverse effects of exotic plants on native plants (Lau & Strauss, 2005; Lenz & Taylor, 2001; Rand et al., 2004), especially in environments with a high density of a common herbivore.…”
