Nonideal nest box selection by tree swallows breeding in farmlands: evidence for an ecological trap?

Abstract: Animals are expected to select a breeding habitat using cues that should reflect, directly or not, the fitness outcome of the different habitat options. However, human-induced environmental changes can alter the relationship between habitat characteristics and their fitness consequences, leading to a maladaptive habitat choice. The most severe case of such nonideal habitat selection is the ecological trap, which occurs when individuals prefer to settle in poor-quality habitats while better ones are available. … Show more

“…The first two components of the PCA explained over 95% of the variance in our landscape characterization data set. We attempted to keep models as simple as possible and because forest cover has been shown to be influential to the nest site selection and foraging behavior of this species (Courtois et al, 2021; Garrett et al, 2021; Rendell & Robertson, 1989), we included only these two components to represent the landscape context. Landscapes expressed by maximizing Comp.1 and minimizing Comp.2 represent ones for which there is a mixture of corn, soybean, and cereals and denuded of forest cover, and are thus referred to as mixed‐row crop landscapes.…”

“…We then reclassified habitats into one of four higher order categories represented by forest, corn and soybean, forage fields (including pastures, hay fields, alfalfa, and clover), and cereals (principally wheat). Higher order categories represent the hypothesized habitats Tree Swallows use as indicators during nest-site selection and the principal habitats composing landscapes throughout this system (Courtois et al, 2021;Rendell & Robertson, 1990;Winkler et al, 2020).…”
