Noninvasive detection of intracardiac tumors by ultrasound and computed tomography

Abstract: Nine patients presenting with intracardiac masses were examined by ultrasound (US) and computed tomography (CT). Of these, 6 patients with atrial myxomas were diagnosed primarily by US, with the movement of the pedunculated tumors well visualized by this technique. The myxomas and the three solid tumors were demonstrated by CT as contrast defects following the intravenous administration of contrast medium. Two solid intraventricular tumors, however, were overlooked by US. In the detection of solid tumors CT is… Show more

“…Their potential advantages over echocardiography are higher accuracy in assessing tumor attachment, endocardial site localization, tumor stalk description, and provision of sectional views of thoracic structures. 23,24 Since the first reported description of a stroke caused by cardiac myxoma in 1952 25 there have been a handful of published case reports and series describing atrial myxoma and secondary ischemic strokes. Only 3 case reports mention the use of thrombolytics in acute strokes caused by cardiac myxoma.…”

“…Nowadays, transthoracic echocardiography is the first diagnostic method, particularly transesophageal echocardiography became the preferred methods for the accurate and reliable diagnosis with 100 % sensitivity [1,10]. Computerized tomography and magnetic resonance image are the other diagnostic methods [11,12]. With this diagnostic modalities, sectional views of thoracic and pulmonary structures can be obtaine and the tumor size, localization, attachment point can be visible accurately [12].…”

“…Nach einigen Publikationen sind durch Computer-und Kernspintomographie eine genauere Größenausdehnung peri-und parakardial wachsender Tumoren und teilweise eine Gewebedifferenzierung möglich [3,10,12,15,18]. In unserem speziellen Fall, bei dem durch den Perikarderguß die rechtsatriale und -ventrikuläre Wand besonders gut abgrenzbar waren, war die Echokardiographie der Kernspintomographie überlegen.…”
