Noninvasive Evaluation of Nerve Conduction in Small Diameter Fibers in the Rat

Abstract: A novel non-invasive technique was applied to measure velocity within slow conducting axons in the distal extreme of the sciatic nerve (i.e., digital nerve) in a rat model. The technique is based on the extraction of rectified multiple unit activity (MUA) from in vivo whole nerve compound responses. This method reliably identifies compound action potentials in thinly myelinated fibers conducting at a range of 9-18 m/s (Aδ axons), as well as in a subgroup of unmylinated C fibers conducting at approximately 1-2 … Show more

“…We extrapolated these values to model 1 μm axons due to a lack of published data on the ultrastructure of small myelinated fibres, resulting in 15 myelin lamellae, and lengths of 1, 3, 5, and 83 μm and axonal diameters of 0.7, 0.7, 0.8, and 0.8 μm for the node of Ranvier, paranodal, juxtaparanodal, and internodal segments, respectively. The 1 and 2 μm model axons had conduction speeds of 4.0 and 8.4 m/s, respectively, consistent with measured values [4244]. …”

“…Furthermore, they can maintain muscle tone and nerve stimulation of facial muscles which is essential for patients with BP. Physiotherapy techniques that aim to retrain the muscles help prevent the formation of muscle contractures and prevent atrophy of the facial muscles [5][6] . The aim of this literature review was to study in the modern literature the effect of different physiotherapy interventions to treat and improve the symptoms of BP.…”

“…At the more granular level, there are comprehensive reviews of non-clinical CNS models for seizure (Bassett et al, 2014;Easter et al, 2009;Metea et al, 2015;Fonck et al, 2015) and drug abuse liabilities (Kallman, 2015;Moser et al, 2010;Porsolt et al, 2002" O"Connor et al, 2011, with consideration of specific screening models for seizure (Authier et al, 2009;Koseki et al, 2014), sleep (Authier et al, 2014) and peripheral nerve function (Zotova & Arezzo, 2013).
