Nonlinear optical properties of Au-nanoparticles conjugated with lipoic acid in water

Abstract: Gold nanoparticles were chemically conjugated with lipoic acid to control their optical properties. Z-scan and other optical techniques were used to characterize the non-linear behavior of the resulting nanostructured materials. The results show that the nonlinearity is of thermal origin, which can be controlled by the use of lipoic acid as well as other organic molecules conjugated onto metal nanoparticles. In particular, the presence of lipoic acid increases n 2 , θ and dn/dt.

“…Many studies on the linear and nonlinear optical properties of Au NPs have used different methods to prepare NPs of different sizes and shapes [ 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ]. It can be clearly seen from these reports that the NLO properties of Au NPs are strongly related to the size and the shape of the nanoparticles, as well as the properties of the selected laser beam.…”

“…Although there have been a few studies on the NLO properties of Au NPs using the z-scan approach [ 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ], no systematic studies on the NLO properties of Au NP colloids using femtosecond laser pulses for different sizes and concentrations of Au NPs and different laser parameters, such as excitation wavelength and intensity, have been conducted to our knowledge. For instance, the authors of [ 18 , 19 , 20 , 22 , 23 ] studied the NLO properties of Au NPs at a certain excitation wavelength and for a given Au NP size.…”

“…Por ejemplo las nanopartículas pueden incrementar la conductividad térmica de los fluidos en el cual están dispersos y como consecuencia modificar las propiedades ópticas no lineales. En particular, el efecto de las nanopartículas de Au en ácido lipoico y agua han sido estudiadas mediante la utilización de la técnica de z-scan donde se menciona que las propiedades ópticas no lineales de las Au-NPs pueden ser modificadas cuando están conjugadas con otras moléculas [6].…”
