Nonlinear plant–plant interactions modulate impact of extreme drought and recovery on a Mediterranean ecosystem

Abstract:  Interaction effects of different stressors, such as extreme drought and plant invasion, can have detrimental effects on ecosystem functioning and recovery after drought. With ongoing climate change and increasing plant invasion, there is an urgent need to predict the short-and long-term interaction impacts of these stressors on ecosystems.  We established a combined precipitation exclusion and shrub invasion (Cistus ladanifer) experiment in a Mediterranean cork oak (Quercus suber) ecosystem with four treatm… Show more

“…Evapotranspiration (ET), ecosystem respiration (R eco ), and gross primary productivity (GPP) declined relative to predrought values by 58, 50, and 47%, respectively. Each of these fluxes decreased further during severe drought, but at lower rates (30,27, and 32% of pre-drought values, respectively). Net ecosystem exchange of carbon (NEE = GPP − R eco ) was buffered by concomitant reductions in GPP and R eco during early drought.…”
