Nonlinear spectral tunability of pulsed fiber laser with semiconductor optical amplifier

Abstract: We examine spectral properties of radiation in the pulsed fiber lasers using the semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) as the gain medium. The complex light dynamics that result from the interplay between the fiber propagation effects in the cavity, the nonlinear effects in the SOA and spectral filtering, shift the generated radiation from the central wavelength of the filter. The resulting wavelength of the output radiation depends on the SOA pump power and the bandwidth of the intracavity filter. This offers… Show more

“…In this Section, we will intrinsically explore fibre-optical tuning methods that do not use the mechanisms presented in Figure 2. It is shown in [121] that non-linear effects in a mode-locked fibre laser with a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) as the active medium may induce significant (tens of nanometres) changes in the output wavelength despite the presence of a spectral filter in the cavity. Without a spectral filter, SOA may shift the wavelength of short pulses to shorter wavelengths by up to 20 nm [122].…”

“…This theory can be extended to include semiconductor lasers if the lasers have two energy levels, one of which is represented by the valence beam and the other of which is represented by the conduction beam. If the semiconductor lasers have two energy levels, this theory can be expanded to include semiconductor lasers [24], [25].…”
