NontoxigenicVibrio choleraeSepticemia in an Immunocompromised Patient

Abstract: We report a recent case of non-O1, non-O139, nontoxigenicVibrio choleraesepticemia in a post-liver-transplant immunocompromised patient associated with prior seafood consumption. Non-O1, non-O139V. choleraestrains have been reported in several cases of extraintestinal infections and seem to be emerging infectious agents especially in patients with immunocompromising conditions.

“…Non-O1/non-O139 serogroup V. cholerae has been confirmed as a causative agent of bacteraemia, almost invariably in patients with liver cirrhosis and immunodeficiency. 1 In mainland China, such cases are rarely reported, especially in inland areas like Beijing.…”

“…Cases of human infection caused by non-O1/non-O139 serogroup Vibrio cholerae are often associated with seawater or seafood and with underlying disorders like cirrhosis and other immunocompromised states. 1 The pathogenesis and epidemic molecular characteristics of invasive non-O1/non-O139 V. cholerae infection remain to be determined. Here, we present a case of bacteraemia due to this strain in an elderly male, in order to highlight the threat of invasive extraintestinal diseases due to non-O1/non-O139 V. cholerae in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients.…”

“…Non-toxigenic strains of V. cholerae have been reported to cause gastrointestinal infection and extraintestinal manifestations such as bacteraemia, wound infections, external ear and neurological infections (Kadkhoda et al, 2012). A well-established risk factor for non-O1, non-O139 V cholerae bacteraemia is the presence of underlying liver disease.…”
