Nontuberculous mycobacterial empyema in an immunocompetent child

Abstract: Nontuberculous mycobacterium (NTM) species are mycobacterial species other than those belonging to the Mycobacterium Tuberculosis complex and Mycobacterium leprae. There are very few reports of NTM in immunocompetent children causing empyema. In this article, we report a 9-year-old immunocompetent girl who presented with Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare empyema.

“…In general, the spectrophotometric method of analysis is the universally recommended procedure for clinical Hb analysis, [15][16][17] wherein blood hemoglobin is converted to cyanmethemoglobin by adding a mixture of potassium cyanide and ferricyanide and measuring the absorbance at 540 nm against a standard solution using a spectrophotometer. The major disadvantage of this method is the complication in conversion of all haemoglobin to cyanmethemoglobin and safety issues relating to the used toxic cyanide reagent.…”

“…Haemoglobin can be assessed by several methods. Considered to be the gold standard and part of the complete blood count, the haemoglobincyanide (HiCN) method uses an internationally accepted reference calibrator and provides a measured haemoglobin concentration 12 . However, this process is time-consuming and increasingly less useful to guide intraoperative transfusion in the context of acute bleeding.…”
