Normal acid exposure time in esophageal pH monitoring in Asian and Western populations: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is defined as a condition that develops when gastric reflux leads to problematic symptoms or complications. 1 GERD is diagnosed by the identification of esophageal mucosal damage or evaluation of the symptoms caused by reflux. Empiric proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy is a reasonable approach to confirm GERD when patients have typical symptoms of reflux, such as heartburn or regurgitation. 2 Further investigation is mainly indicated when there is need for a definite dia… Show more

“…However, diagnosis/definition of GERD in the 4 included studies were partly different and all classified erosive esophagitis as GERD, which could be contradictory to Lyon Consensus. Although the GERD incidence in Western countries is higher than Asian-Pacific region34 and reflux is commoner in Western populations,35 whether the association between abnormal GEFV and endoscopic confirmed GERD would be more clear remains ambiguous based on current studies, so high-quality investigation need to be carried in Western to reveal the association.…”
