Normal blood pressure and preserved diurnal variation in offspring of type 2 diabetic patients characterized by features of the metabolic syndrome: the Fredericia Study.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To examine whether an elevated blood pressure (BP) level and an impaired reduction in nocturnal BP are already present in nondiabetic first-degree relatives of type 2 diabetic patients. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We examined 253 offspring of type 2 diabetic patients using ambulatory BP monitoring and compared the BP level and profile with 275 offspring of nondiabetic subjects. Anthropometric measures and cholesterol, fasting blood glucose, and insulin levels were also compared between groups. RESU… Show more

“…Several other studies investigated the relationship between diurnal blood pressure and MS but they failed to find such relation (Foss et al 2000;Cuspidi et al 2004a). In contrast, the findings of this study were consistent to show a close relation with MS-Score but not with MS-ATP III which was used in the determination of all previous MS studies.…”

“…Control subjects were recruited from the Fredericia Study (8). For each patient in the DMa group, we identified and included a control subject with normal glucose tolerance (NGT) as well as a subject with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) who matched best with regard to gender and age.…”

“…Several other studies investigating the potential relationship between MS and circadian BP pattern have not always detected a relation between MS and non-dipping (Bastos et al, 2007;Cuspidi et al, 2004bCuspidi et al, , 2005Foss et al, 2000;Mancia et al, 2007a), leading to contradictory results. For instance, Cuspidi et al (2004bCuspidi et al ( , 2005 found no significant difference in nocturnal BP, assessed by two consecutive 24 h ABPM sessions, in untreated essential hypertensive MS patients compared to those without it.…”

“…However, the association between MS and non-dipper BP patterning seems controversial (Bastos et al, 2007;Cuspidi et al, 2004bCuspidi et al, , 2005Foss et al, 2000;Hermida et al, 2009b;Mancia et al, 2007a;Tartan et al, 2006;Vyssoulis et al, 2007). Among other factors, this might be due to differences in the studied populations (i.e., normotensive subjects, untreated hypertensives, treated hypertensives), relatively small sample sizes, potential differing effects of individual components of MS on an altered BP pattern, and frequent use of low-reproducible single 24 h ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM).…”
