Normal reference intervals of prognostic nutritional index in healthy adults: A large multi‐center observational study from Western China

Abstract: Background It has been widely reported that the prognostic nutritional index (PNI) played a pivotal role in nutritional assessment of surgical patients and tumor prognosis. In order to improve the accuracy of evaluation in Western China, we established reference intervals (RIs) of PNI in healthy controls. Methods A retrospective cohort study on healthy ethnic Han adults (18–79 years) was conducted to explore the influences of age, gender, study centers, and instruments on PNI and to establish RIs. The data cam… Show more

“…It was calculated as serum albumin (g/L) + 5× absolute lymphocyte counts (×10 9 /L) as modified by Onodera et al [ 22 ]. Based on our previous finding and the normal reference intervals of PNI in China, [ 23 ] a PNI of ≥43.0 is considered normal, and a PNI of 38.0–42.9 and <38.0 reflect moderate and severe malnutrition, respectively. Similar to the GLIM criteria, there is no mild malnutrition for PNI.…”

“…In addition, we calculated the PNI and NLR, which are parameters of nutritional status or prognostic factors identified in previous studies. [21][22][23][24] Although there is no defined reference range, [25][26][27] patients with deviating TSH (IFCC) levels tended to exhibit a decreased PNI and an increased NLR. These results suggested the possibility of a poor nutritional status and general condition in patients with deviating TSH (IFCC) levels.…”

“…The PNI was calculated using the following formula: serum albumin g/L + 5 * lymphocyte count 10 9 /L [21,22]. A score of ≥43.0 is regarded as normal; scores of 38.0 to 42.9 and <38.0 reflect moderate and severe malnutrition, respectively [23]. There is no mild classification of the PNI.…”
