Normal tension glaucoma: Prevalence, etiology and treatment

Abstract: Normal tension glaucoma is the most common type of glaucoma among people of east Asian countries. While a signifi cant minority of cases of normal tension glaucoma respond to drugs or surgical procedures that lower intra-ocular pressure, most cases continue to progress, resulting in a continuing loss of visual fi eld and blindness. We here review the current state of knowledge of this debilitating disease, and evaluate a promising pilot study showing a potential route to evaluate normal tension glaucoma and to… Show more

“…Although the results of NTG are commonly thought to be comparable to those of POAG, its aetiology and damage mechanisms are distinct from those of POAG with high IOP. According to current NTG theory, retinal injury may result from a loss of perfusion; observations of disturbed ocular blood flow (OBF) suggest that retinal venous pressure (RVP) may have increased, damaging the axons of the retinal ganglion cells that make up the optic nerve [9]. Although the precise cause of glaucoma is currently unknown, most cases of POAG exhibit a definite link with higher ocular pressures.…”
