Normal values for tissue velocity and strain rate imaging parameters of left and right atrial myocardium in normal subjects

Abstract: Objective To determine normal values for tissue velocity imaging (TVI) and strain rate imaging (SRI) in the left atrium (LA) and right atrium (RA) in normal subjects. Methods A total of 63 healthy volunteers (50.8% male, age: 20–50 years) prospectively underwent TVI and SRI. The peak systolic velocity (TVs), strain (STs) and strain rate (SRs), peak early and late diastolic velocities (TVe and TVa), strain (STe and STa), and strain rate (SRe and SRa) were measured in the base and mid of the LA and RA walls and … Show more

“…RASr is the most commonly studied of these functions. 29 In our study, although all RA strain parameters were lower at deformation analyses in the group with AF, only RASr was close to statistical significance. Similarly, dilatation of the RA was greater in the group with AF.…”

“…During the evaluation of the RA by deformation analyses, conduit, reservoir, and contraction functions can be calculated. RASr is the most commonly studied of these functions . In our study, although all RA strain parameters were lower at deformation analyses in the group with AF, only RASr was close to statistical significance.…”

“…Moreover, tissue velocity imaging (TVI) and strain rate imaging (SRI) were used to determine normal values in the RA (and LA) in normal subjects. Peak systolic and diastolic velocities of the RA (and LA) decreased from the base to the mid and to the roof, while systolic and diastolic strains and strain rates increased from the base to the mid to the roof [14].…”

“…The maximum volume of the left atrium affects the outcomes of cardiovascular disease and can be used to stratify the risk of death from heart failure [47]. In comparison with TDI, measurements of left atrial deformation and atrial function as a reservoir are more precise predictors of the degree of DD and left ventricular diastolic pressure [47][48][49], as well as the degree of atrial deformation over a unit of time. The advantage of deformation techniques over TDI is that they are independent of the angle of isonance, can be measured overall walls of the left atrium [49], and are less dependent on preload [50].…”
