Normative data of the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale 11 (BIS-11) for Brazilian adults

Abstract: Objective: The Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11) is a valid and reliable instrument, and one of the most often used tools to assess impulsivity. This study assesses the performance of a large sample of adults by using a version of BIS-11 adapted to Brazilian Portuguese. Methods: We assessed 3,053 adults from eight Brazilian states. Internal consistencies and performance data were presented for two correction criteria of BIS-11: original and the two-factor score. Results: The associations between age, sex, r… Show more

“…Higher scores are representative of higher impulsivity. Participants were stratified into three different impulsivity groups based on the adapted normative values for the ABIS-11 derived from the Brazilian normative data 6 : low impulsivity (scores below the 25 th percentile), typical impulsivity (scores ranging from percentile 25 to 75), and high impulsivity (scores above the 75 th percentile).…”

“…Patton et al [5] separated impulsivity into three components: (1) motor impulsivity, (2) attention impulsivity, and (3) lack of planning. Motor impulsiveness is defined as acting without inhibition and perseverance; attentional impulsiveness is the inability to focus on the ongoing task and cognitive instability; and non-planning impulsiveness is inability to plan and think carefully and orientation to the present rather than to the future [6].…”

“…A cutoff score of 6 to 7 reaches a sensitivity of .96 and a specificity of .85. (c) The Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-version 11 (BIS-11) (18,19). The BIS-11 is a self-applied scale composed of 30 items with Likert-type questions that provide a total score of impulsivity and 3 subscores: attention, lack of planning, and motor impulsivity.…”
