North European species of Ceriporiopsis (Basidiomycota) and their Asian relatives

Abstract: Juha Kinnunen and Tuomo Niemelä, Finnish Museum of Natural History, Botanical Museum, P.O. Box 7, FI-00014 University of Helsinki, Finland IntroductionThe genus Ceriporiopsis Donk is an assemblage of white-rot-causing basidiomycetes with monomitic structure and clamped hyphae. Ceriporiopsis as currently understood is obviously polyphyletic, as already noted by Ryvarden (1991; Ryvarden & Gilbertson 1993). The use of molecular and other new methods has revealed that many of the species included in the genus actu… Show more

“…However, the latter species does not share the shape of basidia with C. aneirina. C. pseudogilvescens and C. resinascens are morphologically almost indistinguishable and have been separated only on the basis of basidiospore dimensions (Kinnunen & Niemelä 2005). The present work demonstrated small but constant differences between ITS sequences of the two species (Table 2).…”

“…The exsiccates are deposited in herbaria BRNM, H, TAA, BRNU, LY (herbarium abbreviations are according to http://sweetgum.nybg.org/ih/) and the private collection of Bernard Rivoire (records by Pieri & Rivoire 1996). Microscopic characters of collected specimens were re-examined in an Olympus SZX12 stereomicroscope and BX51 compound microscopes using techniques described by Kinnunen & Niemelä (2005). The basidiospore dimensions were measured using Quickphoto Micro software.…”

“…The MycoBank database (http://www.mycobank.org) includes 64 specific and infraspecific names in Ceriporiopsis and Index Fungorum (http://www.indexfungorum.org) registers 61 ones, but some species were transferred to other genera according to the Index Fungorum database, and the actual number of species is much lower; until now about 30 species were recognized by polypore specialists in the genus worldwide (Hattori 2002, Bernicchia & Ryvarden 2003, Kinnunen & Niemelä 2005, Fortey & Ryvarden 2007, Laessøe & Ryvarden 2010, Tomšovský et al 2010, Vlasák et al 2012, Cui 2013.…”

“…During a time, C. balaenae was sporadically recorded from Central Europe (Czech Republic, Slovakia) (Vampola, Pouzar, 1996), North Europe (Sweden, Finland) (Kinnunen, Niemelä, 2005), and also from Far East (Núñez, 2001) and European Russia (Spirin, Zmitrovich, 2003;Ezhov, Zmitrovich, 2015;Khimich et al, 2015).…”
