North or south? Phylogenetic and biogeographic origins of a globally distributed avian clade

Abstract: Establishing phylogenetic relationships within a clade can help to infer ancestral origins and indicate how widespread species reached their current biogeographic distributions. The small plovers, genus Charadrius, are cosmopolitan shorebirds, distributed across all continents except Antarctica. Here we present a global, species-level molecular phylogeny of this group based on four nuclear (ADH5, FIB7, MYO2 and RAG1) and two mitochondrial (COI and ND3) genes, and use the phylogeny to examine the biogeographic … Show more

“…The recently published Charadrius phylogeny (dos Remedios et al. ) was used to measure phylogenetic relatedness between species for the PGLS analysis. Species with large breeding range sizes are likely to have greater levels of differentiation between populations compared to those with smaller ranges (Gavrilets and Vose ; Losos and Parent ; Kisel and Barraclough ), therefore we incorporated breeding range size into the models.…”

“…We did not perform phylogenetic analyses given the lack of genetic information for many migratory species from Africa and Europe. We selected all sister species present in our dataset, or species that were phylogenetically closely related, and also some trios when the relationship between phylogenetically closely related species was not clear, based on different phylogenetic hypotheses (Riesing et al 2003, Alstr€ om et al 2008, Aliabadian et al 2007, Gonzalez et al 2009, Gibson & Baker 2012, P€ ackert et al 2012, Arbabi et al 2014, Dos Remedios et al 2015, Oatley et al 2015, Tietze et al 2015, Ponti et al 2018; see Table S3). We calculated the niche overlap between breeding ranges or non-breeding ranges of those species pairs, using the same methodology described above.…”

“…alexandrinus closer to C. leschenaultii than with other species and is supported by bootstrap values of 99% in NJ and 96% in MP. C. melodus closer to C. semipalmatus supported by 99% bootstrap values in NJ and 96% in MP, and similar with Barth et al (2013), Dos Remedios et al (2015, Rheindt et al (2011). Both species are closer to C. dubius but only supported by 58% bootstrap values in NJ and 56% in MP.…”
