Northeastward propagation of nocturnal precipitation over the Sichuan Basin

Abstract: The Sichuan Basin (SCB) is located to the east of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) and features nocturnal precipitation. This study explores spatial variation of nocturnal precipitation during the warm season over the SCB using high spatiotemporal resolution merged precipitation products from 2008 to 2017. It is found that there is a prominent northeastward timing delay of precipitation peak over the SCB, that is, the diurnal peak of precipitation occurs in the midnight over the southwestern SCB whereas in the early m… Show more

“…A phase delay is evident going south-west to north-east across the Sichuan Basin, with a peak in amount and frequency at 2300 LST in the south-west of the basin shifting to 1000 LST in the north-east. This has been observed in other studies (e.g., Li et al, 2018Li et al, , 2020. Potential mechanisms include As in Yu et al (2007), their Fig.…”

“…The most prominent feature is the Tibetan Plateau; we are interested in the effect that it has on precipitation, particularly that of its southern flank. The Sichuan Basin can also be distinguished, where the diurnal cycle of precipitation exhibits a clear phase propagation (Li et al, 2020).…”

“…This has been observed in other studies (e.g. Li et al, 2018Li et al, , 2020. Potential mechanisms include the interaction between the mean wind and the orography and the steering-level winds at 700 hPa affecting the propagation of mesoscale convective systems.…”

“…Specifically, we will evaluate physical process discrepancies between observation and prediction linked to the diurnal variation of wind and atmospheric instability (Huang et al., 2013; Zong et al., 2019), which are important reasons for initiation of nocturnal precipitation over the SCB based on the research of Li, Jiang, and Heng (2021) and Li, Li, et al. (2021).…”
