La provincia de El Loa, habitada históricamente por población andina dedicada a actividades agrícolas, pastoriles y de intercambio, ha ocupado un lugar estratégico en la expansión del extractivismo cuprífero chileno y su inserción internacional. Ahí se emplaza Chuquicamata, la que fuera durante parte importante del siglo XX la mina de cobre más grande del mundo. Para avanzar en la comprensión de las transformaciones territoriales que produce esta actividad, efectuamos un análisis histórico-estructural de la agricultura de la provincia entre 1929/30 y 2006/07. Caracterizamos analíticamente las transformaciones agrarias de la zona relacionando su desenvolvimiento con la expansión de la gran minería cuprífera. Teóricamente, nos posicionamos desde el paradigma de la cuestión agraria, reproblematizado a partir de los estudios sobre el extractivismo. En términos metodológicos, usamos estadísticas descriptivas de censos agropecuarios para caracterizar la estructura agraria, y fuentes históricas y secundarias para comprender sus conexiones con la explotación cuprífera.

“…Este lugar no ha estado exento de conflictos entre atacameños y las empresas de tours operadores que operan desde San Pedro de Atacama. No conforme con la banalización del paisaje cultural, las agencias se enfrentaron en enero de 2018 con la comunidad de Socaire, la que cerró el acceso al Salar de Talar debido a la devastación provocada por los turistas, al encontrar rocas con grafitis y observar a un turista realizar kitesurfing sobre la laguna (Molina 2019). Esto advierte que la banalización de los paisajes culturales atacameños son una puerta que abre el territorio a nuevos impactos del turismo masivo sobre el medioambiente, la cultura indígena y la comunidad originaria.…”

Welcome to the second edition of the International Scientific Conference TOURISCAPE2 – Transversal Tourism and Landscape, which this year will take place virtually in Barcelona from 5th to 6th November 2020. The main topic of discussion will be the relationship between tourism and the landscape and, in particular, the problems of the tourist city. The tourist city has two sides, on the one hand the consolidation of the urban aggregate built during the boom of mass tourism as a city and, on the other, the tourist transformation of the post-industrial city. In addition to these cases, we will also discuss the role of landscape in rural tourism. The congress aims to gather researchers of different study fields, focusing on the analysis and/or projects of tourism and landscape. Architects, economists, geographers, landscapers, sociologists, planners, anthropologist and all the academics interested in the spatial dimension of this phenomenon are welcome to join us and to share their experiences. The academic community answered with energy to the call and we received more than 120 proposals from 183 authors affiliated to 50 diferent university in 16 countries. Organized according to different research lines, the proceedings include the final 80 full papers accepted and which have undergone a double-blind review by the international scientific committee. A selection of the best papers concerning tourism cities and urban tourism will be published in the thematic number of the International Journal of Tourism Cities in 2021. While a selection focused on touristic territories and landscapes, have been included in the book “Turismo y paisaje 2: sobre arquitecturas, ciudades, territorios y paisajes del turismo” edited by Tirant Lo Blanch. For copyright reasons, the full text of those last two groups of papers are not included in this proceedings book, but the abstract.

Water quality characterization and assessment are key to protecting human health and ecosystems, especially in arid areas such as northern Chile, where water resources are scarce and rich in pollutants. The objective of this study was to review and assess available official water quality data in the Chilean Altiplano-Puna basins for a 10-year period (2008–2018), including water treatment systems. Within the 43,600 km 2 of Chilean Altiplano-Puna territory, only 16 official water quality monitoring stations had up-to-date data, and the sampling frequency was less than 3 per year. Most of the water samples collected at the evaluated stations exceeded the drinking and irrigation water Chilean standards for arsenic, boron, and electrical conductivity. Moreover, the characteristics of the Altiplano-Puna affect water quality inside and beyond the area, limiting water usage throughout the Altiplano-Puna basins. Drinking water treatment plants exist in urban and rural settlements; however, the drinking water supply in rural locations is limited due to the lack of adequate treatment and continuity of service. Wastewater treatment plants operate in some urban locations but rarely exist in rural locations. Limited data impede the proper assessment of water quality and thus the evaluation of the need for treatment systems. As such, the implementation of public policies that prioritize water with appropriate quantity and quality for local communities and ecosystems is imperative.
