Not All Nonpalpable Breast Cancers Are Alike

Abstract: Clinical and mammographic data of 1009 consecutive patients were correlated with histopathologic data of 1144 biopsy specimens of nonpalpable breast lesions to better define the presentation and biologic behavior of early breast cancer. Patients with malignant neoplasms (269 [24%] of 1144 specimens) were older (mean age, 62.1 years) than patients with benign lesions (mean age, 54.9 years). Furthermore, patients with invasive disease were older (mean age, 63.3 years) than patients with noninvasive disease (mean… Show more

“…Our study findings refine the known trend that PPV increases with age, showing that calcifications and architectural distortion vary slightly less according to age than do mass and asymmetry at screening and diagnostic examinations (27). The increased prevalence of breast cancer and the decreased prevalence of common benign lesions (eg, cysts, fibroadenomas) according to age Masses at screening examinations are better predictive of cancer among white women than among African American or Hispanic women.…”

“…Francheschi et al 5 report that in a series of 1144 biopsies performed for positive mammography, none showed see or squamous metaplasia. This may suggest that early detection via mammography is not particularly valuable with see and helps explain the more advanced disease at diagnosis.…”

“…Un caractère mammographique a été rapporté comme étant évocateur est l'absence de microcalcifications [21]. Pour certains auteurs, le recours à cet examen comme moyen de diagnostic précoce n'est pas valable [22]. Les images radiologiques ne sont pas spécifiques et ils peuvent même prêter confusion avec les images de lésions bénignes.…”
