NOT IN OUR BACKYARD: SPECTROSCOPIC SUPPORT FOR THE CLASHz= 11 CANDIDATE MACS 0647-JD

Abstract: We report on our first set of spectroscopic Hubble Space Telescope observations of the » z 11 candidate galaxy, which is strongly lensed by the MACSJ 0647.7+7015 galaxy cluster. The three lensed images are faint and we show that these early slitless grism observations are of sufficient depth to investigate whether this high-redshift candidate, identified by its strong photometric break at » μ 1.5 m, could possibly be an emission line galaxy at a much lower redshift. While such an interloper would imply the exi… Show more

“…Given the low success rate of Lyα searches, a viable alternative approach is to search for a spectroscopic confirmation of the UV continuum spectral break (see e.g. Dow-Hygelund et al 2005;Malhotra et al 2005;Vanzella et al 2009;Rhoads et al 2013;Watson et al 2015;Pirzkal et al 2015). “…Several surveys have thus been undertaken or are ongoing to search for continuum breaks and very weak Lyα lines with deep WFC3/IR grism spectra (e.g. Treu et al 2015;Schmidt et al 2016;Pirzkal et al 2015).…”

“…Ten years ago, that record belonged to A1689-zD1 at z ∼ 7.5 (Bradley et al 2008;Watson et al 2015). More recently, the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH; Postman et al 2012) yielded the triply-imaged z ∼ 10.8 candidate MACS0647-JD (Coe et al 2013;Pirzkal et al 2015;Chan et al 2016). This redshift has been surpassed only by the grism measurement of z = 11.1 for GN-z11 discovered by Oesch et al (2014) in blank-field imaging by the CANDELS program (Grogin et al 2011;Koekemoer et al 2011).…”
