Notes on Coenosia tigrina (F.) (Diptera: Anthomyiidae), Mainly on Habits and Rearing

Abstract: Coenosia tigrina (F.) was first observed in Canada in 1943 at Ottawa by Mr. A. R. Brooks of the Entomology Division (Mr. G. E. Shewell, Entomology Division, Ottawa, personal communication). By 1917 the insect had been collected as far west as Guelph, Ontario. It was first recorded from the province of Quebec in 1951 by Perron and Lafrance (1952), who observed it preying on adults of Hylemya antiqua (Mg.) in rearing cages at St. Jean. Later observations and surveys by these workers indicated the predator to be … Show more

“…It appears that the compost soil, rich in larval and pupal fauna of a number of arthropod and annelid species, provided a ready source of food for developing C. tigrina larvae. The carnivorous habit of C. tigrinn larvae was observed by Perron et al (1956), who successfully reared them on live H. antiqua pupae in the laboratory. Keilin (1917) also observed that larvae of a related anthomyiid, Melanochelia riparia (Fall.…”

(Diptera: Anthomyiidae) are predators of other insects, mostly adult Diptera of similar or smaller size (Hobby 1931;Perron et al 1956). Its soil-dwelling larvae have been observed feeding externally on the lumbricid Eisenia rosea (Sav.)…”

“…Although C . tigrina adults are polyphagous, in agricultural areas they tend to overlap spatially and temporally with the onion maggot fly, which is a principal prey (LeRoux and Perron 1960;Perron et al 1956). Only recently, however, has C .…”
