“…Since the middle of the twentieth century, Lecanora has received considerable attention from systematists (e.g. Brodo 1984;Brodo et al 1994;Dickhäuser et al 1995;Eigler 1969;Eigler and Poelt 1965;Fröberg 1997;Grube et al 2004;Guderley 1999;Laundon 2003aLaundon , 2003bLeuckert and Poelt 1989;Lumbsch 1994;Lumbsch and Elix 2004;Lumbsch et al 1997;Miyawaki 1988;Motyka 1995Motyka , 1996aPoelt 1952Poelt , 1958Poelt , 1966Poelt et al 1995;Printzen 2001;Ryan 1989aRyan , b, 1998Ryan and Nash 1997;Ryan et al 2004;Śliwa and Wetmore 2000;Śliwa 2007; van den Boom and Brand 2008) and is probably one of the best studied crustose lichen genera. Lecanora, in its traditional circumscription (Zahlbruckner 1926), has been recognized to be an artificial assemblage of species, and several genera have been split off over the years (Choisy 1929(Choisy , 1949Hafellner and Türk 2001;Kalb 1991;Motyka 1995Motyka , 1996aPoelt 1983).…”

“…It differs from both previously mentioned species in having decarboxysquamatic acid (Printzen 2001) and a usually granular-warted, esorediate thallus, which only rarely produces soredia-like granules (Brodo & Vänskä 1984). Detailed descriptions of these species, discussions of similarities and taxonomic remarks are presented for example by Brodo & Vänskä (1984), Tønsberg (1992), Sliwa & Wetmore (2000) and Printzen (2001). Some of P. Czarnota et al the species mentioned above as well as Lecanora flavoleprosa are sometimes found sterile and then the differences in their ecological requirements and chemistry (Table 1) are helpful to recognize them.…”
