NOTES ON THE TYPIFICATION OF FOURTEEN LINNAEAN NAMES FOR EUROPEAN SPECIES OF <i>ERICA, CALLUNA, AND ANDROMEDA</i> (ERICACEAE)

Wild hybrids issued from crossing European species of genus Erica L. are described. The close study of the type material of Erica ϫlazaroana Rivas Goday & Bellot (Erica arborea L. ϫ Erica umbellata L.) shows that it should be regarded as a new synonym of Erica arborea. Erica ϫnelsonii Fagúndez (Erica cinerea L. ϫ Erica tetralix L.), a new nothospecies from Ireland, is described from herbarium material. Erica ϫveitchii nothosubsp. asturica Fagúndez (Erica arborea ϫ Erica lusitanica subsp. cantabrica Fagúndez & Izco) is also described. A study of seed micromorphology shows evidence of hybridization between Erica tetralix L. and Erica ciliaris L.

Abstract: Summary The typification of 14 Linnaean names for European species of the Ericaceae is discussed. The names discussed all appeared first in the genus Erica L., with the exception of Andromeda polifolia L.
