Novasky: Cinematic-quality VoD in a P2P storage cloud

Abstract: In this paper, we present Novasky, a real-world Video-on-Demand (VoD) system capable of delivering cinematicquality video streams to end users. The foundation of the Novasky design is a peer-to-peer (P2P) storage cloud, storing and refreshing media streams in a decentralized fashion using local storage spaces of end users. We present our design objectives in Novasky, and how these objectives are achieved using a collection of unique mechanisms, with respect to caching strategies, coding mechanisms, and the mai… Show more

“…These schemes incur significant processing and re-encoding overhead in the peer network and may lead to duplicated symbols, which decreases network efficiency. As receiving duplicated symbols affects stream continuity, the work in [20] discusses the design of for source-coded VoD to reduce duplicated symbols in the network. The objective of the work, together with the recent work on peer-to-peer VoD [21]- [24], is to fully utilize the uploading bandwidth of the peers.…”

“…Motivated by the observed benefits and design guidelines of using coding-aware peer storage strategy and proactive server push-to-peer strategy, we have developed a new cinematicquality VoD system, named Novasky [11], for both Linux and Windows platforms. It has been deployed and operational in the Tsinghua University campus network since September 2009 5 .…”

“…Following our design choices, we are able to implement, deploy, and measure a complete VoD system based on a P2P storage cloud over a high-bandwidth network, namely, Novasky [11]. Rather than typical emulation-based experiments, Novasky is a production-quality VoD system that we implemented with over 100,000 lines of code (LOC) in C++ from scratch to incorporate our proposed coding-aware peer storage replacement and proactive server push-to-peer strategy.…”

“…In this scenario, the capacities of VNs are large enough, and basic admission and peer selection policy are adopted. By (1)(2)(3)(4)(5), we can get the theoretical value of XI . We simulate the processes that the clients join and leave the system, measure the number of requests, and compare the simulation results with the theoretic results.…”

“…For lowering demand delay, boosting throughput and reducing running cost, the P2P and CDN technologies are widely used in the streaming service systems [1][2][3]. With the fusion of the peer-to peer (P2P) technology and the content delivery network (CDN) technology, the streaming service system leads streaming service to move from central servers to the proxy servers that distributed on the edge of the Internet.…”
