Novel 1,2‐Dicarba‐closo‐dodecaborane(12) Derivatives of Selenium

Abstract: Lithiation of 1,2-dicarba-closo-dodecaborane(12) (1) followed by insertion of selenium into both C-Li bonds leads to the 1,2-diselenolato-1,2-dicarba-closo-dodecaborane(12) dianion (3), which is converted by oxidative coupling into the cyclic eight-membered bis(diselane) 4 with annellated carborane moieties. Oxidative addition of 4 to ethenebis(triphenylphosphane)platinum(0) gives the bis(triphenylphosphane)platinum(II) complex 7, which contains a chelating 1,2-diselenol-

“…The distance between two selenium atoms (Se1 and Se2 in Fig. 1) in 6 is 3.16 Å, much longer than an average Se-Se bond distance {2.29-2.39 Å} [55][56][57]. By analogy with 5-6, compounds 7 and 8 can be considered as 50-electron, electronically unsaturated dichalcometallaboranes where both the chalcogen atoms bound contiguously to one boron and two metal centers.…”

“…In addition, the presence of another defined product 6 was noted by 13 C, 29 Si and 77 Se NMR spectroscopy, and the data appear to be consistent with a five-member ring containing the Se-Se-SiPh 2 unit, a rearrangement product of 4. Redox reactions between 1 and silicon chlorides appear to be common, since in a previous study 54 it was found that the reaction of two equivalents of 1 with SiCl 4 gave mainly the bis(diselane) 11 instead of a spirosilane.…”

“…Recently, we described the molecular structures of cyclic compounds of tellurium [1] and selenium [2] containing two annellated [(dicarba-closo-dodecaborano)] units. The title compound is a new modification of the bis(ortho-carboran-1,2-diyl) selenium species containing two selena bridges.…”
