Novel Active-Matrix Micro-LED Display With External Compensation Featuring Fingerprint Recognition

Abstract: This paper proposes a novel active-matrix (AM) micro light-emitting diode (micro-LED) display architecture featuring fingerprint detection. A new pixel circuit comprising four transistors and one capacitor (4T1C) is proposed to compensate for threshold voltages externally. The proposed AM micro-LED display does not need any additional light sources and sensors because an LED itself can be used for photosensors. The proposed 4T1C pixel circuit can isolate the effects of LED photocurrents caused by ambient light… Show more

“…On top of the main function to display images on the screen, more efforts have made good progress on integrating additional functions in display panels such as image sensing [146][147][148], fingerprint sensing [149][150][151][152][153][154], temperature sensing [155][156][157][158][159], visible light communication [160][161][162][163], and actuators for haptic applications [164]. To support these diverse functions as well as the display scanning, the demands for the higher flexibility in gate driver circuits is going to increase.…”

“…Reverse-biased LEDs have photodetecting characteristics, so when lights are irradiated, photocurrents flow through the LEDs. In our previous studies, we proposed pixel circuits using TFTs and verified that AMLED displays are capable of photodetection [4,5]. In this study, we introduce a pixel driver IC (PDIC) that can drive RGB LEDs and propose a sensing circuit for light detection.…”

“…Actually, by combining the facial regions with a high Facial Region Utility-that is, the jaw, middle face, left face, and right faceit is possible to enhance the specific outcome that is reported when the entire face is used in those applications. In [9] It has been suggested to use a new AM micro-LED display architecture with external compensation to enable fingerprint recognition without the need for extra light sources or sensors. The universal fingerprint recognition technology is based on the shared structure of all LED pixel circuits.…”
