Novel applications of lignin in composite materials

Abstract: Some exploratory work was done to look at novel applications, such as filler use and comonomers, for lignin in thermosetting unsaturated polyesters and vinyl esters. The solubility of different lignins (pine kraft, hardwood, ethoxylated, and maleinated) was determined in different resin systems (acrylated epoxidized soybean oil, hydroxylated soybean oil, soy oil monoglyceride, and a commercial vinyl ester) to give an idea of the compatibility of lignin with the resin systems that were used. Further, the use of… Show more

“…Finally, lignified materials effectively resist attacks by micro organisms by impeding penetration of destructive enzymes into the cell walls. When incorporated in a plastic, lignin, due to its phenolic base structure, could improve the mechanical properties (Thielemans et al, 2002). Fig.…”

“…Lignin has interesting grafting and cross-linking abilities that make it an interesting material for use in polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) and other polymeric systems. Lignin has been proven to be degradable by certain wood-rotting fungi, such as white rot fungi, which makes it possible to break down lignin-based materials in some environments (Mousavioun et al 2012;Thielemans et al 2002;Yamamoto et al 2000).…”

“…Completely ecofriendly Thielemans et al (2002) prepared a binderless board by heating and pressing cellulosic fibers at high temperature. Lignin, an amorphous component, starts plasticizing at a high temperature (above 200 °C) and behaves like a thermoplastic resin (Lora and Glasser 2002).…”
