Novel biodegradable composites based on PHBV: Effect of nanocellulose incorporation on the non‐isothermal crystallization kinetic and structural parameters

Abstract: This study presents the non‐isothermal behavior of poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) biodegradable films with 1–5 wt% of cellulose nanoparticles (CNs) manufactured by solution casting using N,N‐dimethylformide and chloroform as the solvents. X‐ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with field emission gun were performed for CNs in order to determine its morphology and crystalline properties. The effect of non‐isothermal crystallization of PHBV and its nanocomposites was studied usin… Show more

“…For plasticized composites, the increase in the TEC mass fraction up to 30% each, in general, led to an increase in the L , L c , and L a from 63 Å (PFT – 100.0.0) to 89 Å (PFT – 40.30.30), from 25 Å (PFT – 100.0.0) to 32 Å (PFT – 40.30.30) and from 38 Å (PFT – 100.0.0) to 61 Å (PFT – 40.30.30), independent of the injection flow direction. Similar behavior was reported by Benini et al 49 for composites of PHBV and cellulose nanoparticles. According to these authors, the increase in the L and L c values with the increasing mass fraction of cellulose nanoparticles is due to the decrease in the energy barrier for PHBV crystallization from melting.…”

“…Low content of HV in PHBV leads to reduction of flexibility, elongation and impact strength, and higher content decreases its brittleness due to inhibition of secondary crystallization [3]. PHBV-based composites are becoming increasingly the object of scientific interest [4,5].…”

“…Polysaccharides from natural sources have been used for various applications, such as to promote anticancer [4] and antitumor activity [5], for immunomodulatory dietary applications [6], adsorption of petroleum [7], reinforcement of composites [8][9][10][11] and production of nanoreinforcements [12,13], among others. On the other hand, ionic liquids (ILs) possess inherent characteristics, such as low cost and environmentally safe characteristics (depending their chemical configuration (cation and anion selection)), compared to conventional electrolytes; therefore, they have attracted considerable attention in the scientific field [14][15][16][17].…”
