Novel Detection Method for Consecutive DC Commutation Failure Based on Daubechies Wavelet with 2nd-Order Vanishing Moments

Abstract: Accurate detection and effective control strategy of commutation failure (CF) of high voltage direct current (HVDC) are of great significance for keeping the safe and stable operations of the hybrid power grid. At first, a novel detection method for consecutive CF is proposed. Concretely, the 2nd and higher orders' derivative values of direct current are summarized as the core to judge CF by analyzing the physical characteristics of the direct current waveform of the converter station in CF. Then, the Daubechi… Show more

“…The commutation failure immunity index (CFII) proposed in [30] was used This abnormal phenomenon is mainly related to commutation failure. Lin et al [29] indicate that in the process of commutation failure caused by an AC fault, aside from the absolute value of bus voltage, the voltage drop speed also has a large effect on the commutation process. In the Ncut case, although the LOE SC always absorbs reactive power resulting in a lower bus voltage value compared with the Cut2 case, the LOE SC still provides a positive reactive power increment at the instant of system fault, which slows down the process of bus voltage drop, thus avoiding commutation failure to a certain extent.…”

“…However, this method cannot guarantee accurate prediction of the commutation voltage and DC current in every fault condition. In references [16, 17], the commutation failure is identified by using the mathematical morphology and wavelet variation to analyse the characteristic of DC current waveforms, whose threshold value depends on large data samples.…”
