Novel Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals with Very Large Spontaneous Polarization

Abstract: A 6-dimensional grand unified theory with the compact space having the topology of a real projective plane, i.e., a 2-sphere with opposite points identified, is considered. The space is locally flat except for two conical singularities where the curvature is concentrated. One supersymmetry is preserved in the effective 4d theory. The unified gauge symmetry, for example SU(5) , is broken only by the non-trivial global topology. In contrast to the Hosotani mechanism, no adjoint Wilson-line modulus associated wit… Show more

“…Detailed synthetic procedure was reported in the previous paper. 2 The FLC mixtures were prepared by adding 2% by weight of the chiral compound into a nonchiral smectic C mixture which was a mixture of several kinds of 2-(4-alkoxyphenyl)-5-alkylpyrimidine and had the phase transition temperatures as follows3; …”

“…The work presented in this paper consists of the design, synthesis and characterization of the ferroelectric liquid crystal S(+)-(2-octyl)-40-decenyloxy-3,39-difluoroterphenyl-4-carboxylate (see structure in figure 1; designated as compound 11), with improved electro-optical properties suitable for display applications [5,6]. Electro-optic results will be presented elsewhere.…”
