Novel Imaging Techniques in Acute Kidney Injury

Abstract: Imaging of the kidneys can provide valuable information in the work up and management of acute kidney injury. Several different imaging modalities are used to gather information on anatomy of the kidney, to rule out obstruction, differentiate acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease and to obtain information on renal blood flow and GFR. Ultrasound is the most widely used imaging modality used in the initial work up of AKI. The utility of contrast enhanced computerized tomography and magnetic resona… Show more

“…Information regarding the echogenicity and kidney size is valuable for the guidance of physicians in an appropriate and suitable manner of decision making in the acute kidney injury management. Eliminating the probability of significant decision making is one of the chief efficacies of ultrasound in this setting [6].…”

“…In humans, CEUS has already been applied to the study of various kidney diseases, including chronic kidney disease (CKD) [36] (notably DKD [1,37] ), AKI [38] , and kidney transplantation [39] . All of these investigations indicate that CEUS is well-tolerated, and that the subjects experience no side effects due to the contrast agents.…”

“…Clinical manifestations of post-renal obstructive uropathy vary with the site, degree and rapidity of obstruction [Kapoor, Chan 2001]. B-mode ultrasonography is a very useful imaging tool to rule out the possibly of urinary tract obstruction as a cause of AKI [Kalantarinia 2009]. Early detection of urinary tract obstruction may prevent patients from progressing to established AKI by early release of urinary obstruction [Choudhury 2010].…”
