Novel insights regarding anaphylaxis in children ‐ With a focus on prevalence, diagnosis, and treatment

Abstract: Allergic reactions range widely from mild local symptoms to anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a serious, life-threatening systemic hypersensitivity reaction that is rapid in onset, possibly resulting in death. 1 Typically, a combination of skin, respiratory, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal symptoms is observed in patients with anaphylaxis. The diagnosis of anaphylaxis can be established when any one of the three clinical criteria is met. Triggers and epidemiologic factors associated with anaphylaxis vary by age… Show more

“…Allergy workup is imperative to investigate triggers and to prevent recurrence by developing personalized risk reduction strategies 2,16,29 . Follow‐up by an allergy specialist will allow the implementation of preventive measures (allergen avoidance, written emergency plan, assessment of food and drug alternatives), AIT (Hymenoptera, latex, food), or specific desensitization (specific foods and drugs) 1,2,7,16,20,30 . Oral desensitization is a promising treatment for immediate severe CM, egg, and other food allergies 7,16,30 .…”

“…Food allergy is the most common cause of anaphylaxis in childhood, 29 and schools and day care are places of increased risk of reaction. Food allergy and anaphylaxis prevention measures in school and day care vary greatly from country to country, and even between schools of a same area.…”

“…The worldwide prevalence of allergic disease has increased over the last decades (1,2). Among allergic diseases, food allergy (FA) represents a major public health concern as the leading cause of anaphylaxis in the pediatric population (3)(4)(5)(6) and and being associated to a higher risk of severe forms in asthmatic children (7). Such assumption should be carefully taken into consideration because the prevalence of FA in children in Europe is~3.1% (8) and more than a third of food allergic children have asthma (9).…”
