Novel low‐profile foam dielectric over‐the‐shoulder antenna based on coupled patches technique

Abstract: The article presents a novel wearable antenna composed of two coupled patches excited by an overlapping folded dipole. In spite of being operated in a relatively low frequency band 380 ÷ 390 MHz, the antenna shows a very low profile and other dimensions are acceptable as well. Besides a very low absorption of the radiated RF power by any nearby human body, it also ensures a very good immunity against influence on antenna parameters. In comparison to commonly used simple conformal monopole antennas, the present… Show more

“…With respect to VHF band antennas, the higher frequency allows the implementation of slightly more complex multi-layer antennas (e.g. patches [64]- [65], slotted and E-shaped PIFAs [71]- [75][77], meandered slots [76], printed slot/dipole antennas [78], dipoles on thick ceramic substrates [69] or high impedance surfaces [70]), in addition to simpler single-layer dipole-like antennas [63], [66]- [68] (Fig. 6).…”

“…Different from conventional wearable UHF dipole-like antennas, the optimized antenna does not exhibit nulls in the horizontalplane pattern. Another antenna that can be worn as a strap over the shoulder has been suggested in [64]- [65]. It operates at the 380-390MHz band.…”

“…Doing so improves the on-body performance of the designed antennas. [17][18][19] The composite substrate technique makes use of custom-engineered composite materials, like ceramic polymers, to develop tags for bodyworn applications. Composite materials provide flexibility and improved gain along with miniaturized size.…”
