Novel method of minimally invasive removal of large lipoma after laser lipolysis with 980 nm diode laser

Abstract: Lipomas are the most common benign tumor of the soft tissue, often presenting as soft, mobile subcutaneous masses. These lesions are often removed for cosmetic reasons, although they may be removed secondary to considerable discomfort or paresthesias. The large majority of lipomas appear as small, solitary lesions that are best removed by surgical excision. However, surgical removal of large (>10 cm) or multiple lesions may result in significant scarring. Tumescent local anesthesia and liposuction of larger le… Show more

“…On the other hand, laser lipolysis, performed alone or before liposuction, has been reported to further facilitate removal of these lesions and can be a highly effective minimally invasive method for removal of large lipomas. 51 We have successfully treated simple polylipomatosis of the upper limbs by SAL.…”

“…Simple surgical excision remains the main and most effective treatment, however, removal of large or multiple lesions may be problematic and result in significant objectionable scars. 51,52 The role of liposuction, a less invasive treatment modality, in the treatment of lipomas or multiple lipomatosis has been reported. 50,53 However, because of the fibrous nature of the capsule, liposuction has limitations; incomplete resection is frequent, possibly leading to recurrence; moreover, it does not allow histopathological analysis.…”

“…Laser lipolysis is also suitable for corrective procedures in which small areas of adiposity may not have been completely removed via previous SAL or other body contouring procedures. Laser disruption has also been reported to facilitate removal of larger lipomas from smaller incisions as well [32].…”
