Novel methods for parameter-based analysis of myocardial tissue in MR images

Abstract: The analysis of myocardial tissue with contrast-enhanced MR yields multiple parameters, which can be used to classify the examined tissue. Perfusion images are often distorted by motion, while late enhancement images are acquired with a different size and resolution. Therefore, it is common to reduce the analysis to a visual inspection, or to the examination of parameters related to the 17-segment-model proposed by the American Heart Association (AHA). As this simplification comes along with a considerable los… Show more

“…Applications include image guided radiofrequency ablation planning, 19 lung parenchyma analysis, 20 DCE-MRI analysis of breast carcinoma, and software assistants for cardiovascular diagnosis. 21 Furthermore, software assistants have been proposed for clinical neuroimaging, including neurosurgical planning and software support of diagnosis and therapy monitoring of neurological disorders. Both method and workflow-oriented tools have been developed.…”

“…A combination of rigid and elastic registrations employing mutual information as the similarity measure works reasonably well for most data sets [62]. For parameter computation, the user examines the motion-corrected data set and selects an ROI in healthy myocardial tissue.…”

“…The recommendations of the AHA also included a proposal how to arrange the 17 segments in a bull's eye plot [4]. These types of bull's eye plots are often applied when the resolution of the data is fairly low, for example in the visualizations of Hennemuth et al [9] of perfusion data. Occasionally the right ventricle is included as well [5].…”
