Novel Mra-Based Sparse Mimo and Simo Antenna Arrays for Automotive Radar Applications

Abstract: Automotive radars make use of angle information obtained from antenna arrays to distinguish objects that lie in the same range-doppler cell (relative to the ego vehicle). This paper proposes novel ways of using presently known minimum redundancy arrays (MRAs) in single-input multiple-output (SIMO) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) automotive radars. Firstly, an MRA-based sparse MIMO array is proposed as a novel modification to the nested MIMO array. The proposed sparse MIMO array uses MRAs as the trans… Show more

“…However, a thorough review of the properties of sparse MIMO arrays is beyond the scope of this article. However, it is easy to foresee that if the transmit and receive arrays are maximally sparse with hole-free co-arrays (like MRAs), the resulting MIMO radar array would also be highly sparse and, therefore, capable of providing the largest virtual array aperture for a given number of sensors and hence the highest DOFs as reported recently [94]. Several novel designs of sparse MIMO radar arrays are being proposed.…”

“…A linear array is costly and complicated to design if compared to a circular dish antenna. However, the inherent flexibility of phased-array antennas to steer and control the beam shape represents an attractive feature for multi-function radar system manufacturing [10][11][12][13][14].…”
