Novel nursery habitat of hydrothermal vent crabs

Abstract: Breeding strategies of hydrothermal vent biota are of central interest for the "supply-side" ecology and evolution at vent sites. Researchers from the National Taiwan Ocean University have recently uncovered a new nursery habitat for the vent crab, Xenograpsus testudinatus (Decapoda, Brachyura) at a shallow hydrothermal vent site that extends from the deep-sea Okinawa Trench, off the northeastern coast of Taiwan (N.W.
