Novel Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride)/Montmorillonite Polymer Inclusion Membrane: Application to Cr(VI) Extraction from Polluted Water

Abstract: Novel hybrid polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) based on poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) (polymer matrix) and Aliquat 336 (ion carrier) and containing native sodium (Cloisite Na+ (CNa)) and organo-modified (Cloisite 30B (C30B)) Montmorillonites were elaborated and tested for the removal of toxic Cr(VI) ions from the aqueous solution. The influence of the nanoclay incorporation on the physicochemical properties of PVDF-based PIMs was studied and the resulting membrane transport properties of the Cr(VI) ions we… Show more

“…Polystyrene composite with OC based on a fluorine-containing surfactant exhibited the reduction of water contact angle of the pristine polymer (91 • ) to the value of 32 • for the composite [40]. In another work, the modification of poly(vinylidene fluoride) with OC led to the reduction of water contact angle to ~15 • [41]. The surface topography, roughness, and the concentration of polar groups on the surface, including the silicate particles, are the most likely explanation for this phenomenon.…”

“…To enhance the performance of PIMs, some other miscellaneous strategies have been also employed. Among these strategies are the improvement of mechanical properties of PIMs by addition of montmorillonite (MMT) [21], and the enhancement of the extraction capacity of PIMs by using nanoparticles [22].…”
