Novel red mud/polyacrylic composites synthesized from red mud and its performance on cadmium removal from aqueous solution

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Red mud (RM) is a solid waste generated by the aluminum industry and has demonstrated promising physical adsorption properties for cadmium (Cd) due to its relatively large surface area. To improve the chemisorption performance of RM for Cd(II) ions, a new method utilizing in situ graft polymerization in a reversed-phase suspension system is proposed, and red mud/polyacrylic acid (RM/PAA) composites were synthesized for the first time. RESULTS:The RM/PAA composites were used to adsorb Cd(II) ions fr… Show more

“…The band of MRM at 1635.13 cm −1 is attributed to the O–H stretching vibrations in Mn-OH 20 , 32 . The band at 1418.62 cm −1 appearing in RM is attributed to CO 3 2+ ,proving that RM contains many carbonate compounds 33 , 34 . However, the CO 3 2+ peak in the MRM shifts and decreases in intensity after loading MnO 2 .…”

“…Subsequently, the experimental data were assessed with Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The Langmuir isotherm (Eqn (6)) holds that monomolecular‐layer adsorption occurs on homogeneous binding sites and the Freundlich isotherm (Eqn (7)) holds that the surface adsorption sites are heterogeneous 44,45 : 0.25emCnormaleqe=Cnormaleqnormalm+1kLqm0.25em 0.25emlnqe=lnKF+1nlnCe0.25em …”

“…Red mud is composed of a large number of active components (such as Fe 2 O 3 , Al 2 O 3 , and CaO) that show certain adsorption properties for anions (such as phosphorus). The adsorption performance of the anions must be improved by modification, which includes acid treatment, heat treatment, and chemical reagent modification 16,17 . Hu et al .…”

“…The adsorption performance of the anions must be improved by modification, which includes acid treatment, heat treatment, and chemical reagent modification. 16,17 Hu et al employed hydrochloric acid to activate red mud particles, which then showed an excellent adsorption capacity for recovering phosphorus in water. 18 Lin et al studied the effects of heat treatment on the adsorption capacity of red mud, and the results showed that the calcium and aluminum of the treated sample adsorbed phosphate and generated secondary adsorption sites.…”
