Novel Retro-Inverso Peptide Antibiotic Efficiently Released by a Responsive Hydrogel-Based System

Abstract: Topical antimicrobial treatments are often ineffective on recalcitrant and resistant skin infections. This necessitates the design of antimicrobials that are less susceptible to resistance mechanisms, as well as the development of appropriate delivery systems. These two issues represent a great challenge for researchers in pharmaceutical and drug discovery fields. Here, we defined the therapeutic properties of a novel peptidomimetic inspired by an antimicrobial sequence encrypted in human apolipoprotein B. The… Show more

“…We conclude that the antimicrobial manifestation of peptide preparations against bacteria and the effect against Streptococcus mutans are encouraging results. Evidence in caries development places emphasis on the role of S. mutans ; it possesses characteristics linked to dental caries and can attach to other oral bacteria as well as the acquired enamel pellicle (acidogenicity, aciduricity, and the ability to build exopolysaccharides from sucrose) [ 44 , 45 , 46 ].…”

“…Hence, ApoB-derived peptides appear promising candidates to be employed as novel food biopreservatives able to counteract bacterial infections without inducing resistance development. Based on this, future experiments will be performed by incorporating peptides in edible films used to wrap food samples [24,63] and to prevent their contamination.…”

“…Encrypted peptides (EPs) were discovered as a result of such efforts. These molecules have now been identified across the tree of life, including in the human proteome 8,10,11 . Many EPs have been found to have potent antimicrobial properties 13 .…”
