Novel Ring Resonator Combining Strong Field Confinement With High Optical Quality Factor

Abstract: Slot waveguide ring resonators appear promising candidates for several applications in silicon photonics. Strong field confinement, high device tunability, and low power consumption are beneficial properties compared with strip waveguides. Slot waveguide ring resonators suffer, however, from rather low optical quality factors due to optical losses. This letter proposes and experimentally demonstrates a novel concept based on a partially slotted ring and a strip-to-slot mode converter. An exceptional high quali… Show more

“…Recently, a hybrid-waveguide ring resonator was proposed to combine a strip waveguide with a slot waveguide in such a way that the figure of merit FOM=Srr/FWHM is maximized [14]. Figure 4 shows a schematic representation of this SOI ring resonator, which consists of both a strip waveguide and a slot waveguide [47,48,49,50]. This type of ring resonator has been demonstrated to have an improved figure of merit compared to more common strip or slot waveguide-based ring resonators, as it is summarized in Table 1.…”

“…The EO response is provided by the polymer-clad. A widely used polymer system consists of the linear conjugated dye Disperse Red 1 (DR1) doped into a poly[methyl methacrylate] (PMMA) matrix [8]. It was used to demonstrate the feasibility of employing the linear [9] as well as the quadaratic EO effect in SOI slot-waveguides demonstrating its high potential for SOH photonics [4].…”

“…As a consequence, slot-waveguide resonators like micro-ring resonators have typically small optical quality factors (Q-factors) [3,6,10]. To overcome this deficiency a novel ring resonator concept where the ring is only partially slotted have been recently proposed [23]. This approach combines an efficient slot-waveguide phase shifter with a low loss and strongly guiding silicon strip-waveguide in the same ring resonator.…”
