Novel SNPs in the SPAG11 gene and association with testicular biometric variables in Boer goats and application of the levelled-container technique

Abstract: Testicular volume (TV) is one of the most important traits used in evaluation of the reproductive capacity of male animals. The levelled-container used in the present study was found to be reliable instrument to measure TV, based on a water displacement method. Spermassociated antigen 11 (SPAG11) is an important gene that affects male reproductive performance. An objective of the present study, therefore, was to determine if single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in a fragment of the SPAG11 gene could be used … Show more

“…However, exact mechanism of action of SPAG11 gene has not yet been reported, the evidence of age specific (Yenugu et al, 2006), androgen dependent, localized expression of SPAG11 gene in different parts of epididymis and sperm surface (Hamil et al, 2000;Avellar et al, 2007) reflects possible role of SPAG11 gene in sperm maturation and acquiring motility. In Boer goats, testicular biometric variables were reported to have association with SNPs in SPAG11 gene (Harighi et al, 2019), that further strengthens the hypothesis of the gene playing significant role in male reproductive efficiency.…”

“…For each male goat, the scrotum was examined by palpation, and the length, diameter, and height of each testicle, as well as total scrotal circumference, width (cm), and length (cm), were measured. Testicular length, testicular diameter, and scrotal thickness were determined with a metal caliper precision of 0.01 mm [11]. The scrotal circumference, scrotum width, and scrotum length were measured by a tape measure [11,12].…”
