“…During the 8 th & 9 th centuries, the inhabited area of Santarém would most likely have been concentrated in the alcáçova (castle), located on the highest and most central part of the hilltop settlement. A small neighborhood was located to the northeast and outside of the walled area ( Fig 1b ), but was later incorporated into the city as the population grew and the defensive line was extended North into the Marvila Hill by the 11 th /12 th century [ 91 ].
