Gamma correction is a common image processing technique that is common in video or still image systems. However, this simple and efficient method is typically expressed using the power law, which gives rise to practical difficulties in designing a reconfigurable hardware implementation. For example, the conventional approach calculates all possible outputs for a pre-determined gamma value, and this information is hardwired into memory components. As a result, reconfigurability is unattainable after deployment. This study proposes using the Taylor series to approximate gamma correction to overcome the aforementioned challenging problem, hence, facilitating the post-deployment reconfigurability of the hardware implementation. In other words, the gamma value is freely adjustable, resulting in the high appropriateness for offloading gamma correction onto its dedicated hardware in system-on-a-chip applications. Finally, the proposed hardware implementation is verified on Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC ZCU106 Evaluation Kit, and the results demonstrate its superiority against benchmark designs.

This paper focuses on new technologies that are practically useful for telemedicine. Three representative systems are introduced: a Digital Video Transport System (DVTS), an H.323 compatible videoconferencing system, and Vidyo. Based on some of our experiences, we highlight the advantages and disadvantages of each technology, and point out technologies that are especially targeted at doctors and technicians, so that those interested in using similar technologies can make appropriate choices and achieve their own goals depending on their specific conditions.

In recent years, machine vision algorithms have played an influential role as core technologies in several practical applications, such as surveillance, autonomous driving, and object recognition/localization. However, as almost all such algorithms are applicable to clear weather conditions, their performance is severely affected by any atmospheric turbidity. Several image visibility restoration algorithms have been proposed to address this issue, and they have proven to be a highly efficient solution. This paper proposes a novel method to recover clear images from degraded ones. To this end, the proposed algorithm uses a supervised machine learning-based technique to estimate the pixel-wise extinction coefficients of the transmission medium and a novel compensation scheme to rectify the post-dehazing false enlargement of white objects. Also, a corresponding hardware accelerator implemented on a Field Programmable Gate Array chip is in order for facilitating real-time processing, a critical requirement of practical camera-based systems. Experimental results on both synthetic and real image datasets verified the proposed method’s superiority over existing benchmark approaches. Furthermore, the hardware synthesis results revealed that the accelerator exhibits a processing rate of nearly 271.67 Mpixel/s, enabling it to process 4K videos at 30.7 frames per second in real time.
