Nuchal Fibroma

Abstract: Nuchal fibroma was diagnosed in a 54-year-old diabetic woman with a two year history of increased skin thickness of her low-posterior neck and interscapular region, causing discomfort and limitation of neck and arm motion. Physical and laboratory examinations excluded further disorders. The patient was released, free from symptoms, after complete excision of the soft tissue tumor.

“…It presents clinically with slow‐growing, ill‐defined induration and swelling 2,4,5 . Histologically, there are sheets of thick, disorganized collagen bundles with interspersed mature fat in the subcutaneous tissue 1–8 . In this report, we describe a patient with NF which was clearly visualized with computed tomography (CT).…”

“…Macroscopically, lesions of NF are poorly circumscribed, firm, fibrofatty masses 2,4 . Histologically, there are sheets of thick, disorganized collagen bundles with interspersed mature fat in the subcutaneous fat 1–8 . They radiate out into the surrounding subcutaneous fat with some dermal involvement and are superficial to the deep fascia 1,3–5,7 .…”

“…1 Only rare case reports and one clinicopathologic series of nine cases have thus far been published. 2,3 Involvement of an extranuchal site has been reported on one previous occasion. 4 We describe the clinicopathologic features of 52 cases of nuchal-type fibroma and demonstrate an association with diabetes and, to a lesser extent, Gardner's syndrome.…”

“…It is generally unencapsulated and is characterized histologically by sheets of hypocellular dense collagen interspersed with a small number of mature adipocytes, and may have entrapped nerve fibers. 13,14 It is considered benign and generally doesn't recur after adequate resection. Nuchal fibrocartilaginous pseudotumor has been described after neck injuries and the lesions are located at the junction of the nuchal ligament and the deep cervical fascia.…”
